PENCK, A. R.

A.R. Penck was the pseudonym of Ralf Winkler, a German painter, printmaker, and sculptor born in Dresden in 1939 and who died in Zürich in 2017. His work is characterized by paintings and sculptures that incorporate neo-primitive symbols, human figures, and recurring patterns. He gained recognition alongside fellow Neo-Expressionists Georg Baselitz and Jörg Immendorff. Together, this group was known for their raw, expressive style and shared engagement with Germany’s political structures and cultural heritage.
