de Staël, Nicolas
Nicolas de Staël (St. Petersburg 1914 – Antibes 1955) was a French painter of Russian origin, celebrated for his expressive use of thick impasto and his highly abstract approach to landscape. In addition to painting, he worked in collage, illustration, and textile design.
He is considered one of the most important representatives of abstract, non-objective art in France.
